The simplest format for this routine would be to just count the total
number of instructions executed. A Java program is inherently
multithreaded, and has one JVM thread for each thread in the user's Java
program. In addition, other code is generated in the data space to
execute the transitions between interpreted and compiled code. The first
is that it compiling for profile feedback does increase the complexity
and time for the build process. Assume that the execution frequency for
a branch instruction, i, in the reference workload is denoted Fi. When
you are ready to terminate the run, send the signal again, which will
disable data recording.
How does the program arrive at this point in the execution? Profiling
Steady-state Behavior of an Application  Either mechanism can be used to
look at the steady-state behavior of an application. The overhead of
these routines, and the cost of writing the experiments to disk will
dilate the runtime of the Java program. A more advanced analysis tool
might look at cache misses that the application encounters for a given
cache structure. BIT can gather data on the number of times basic blocks
are executed, or the probability that a given branch is taken. More
details on binary optimisation with -binopt can be found in a recent
