Thanks for the feedback.
I integrated the patch.
The major functional changes I added are:
 * new variables in login.defs to specify a default/fixed/random number of rounds
 * variable salt length
 * new options to chpasswd/chgpasswd
 * ENCRYPT_METHOD/MD5_CRYPT_ENAB always used (not only when !USE_PAM)

ENCRYPTMETHOD_SELECT is still not (never) defined, and I did not test
anything.
I need to check the behavior of old libc (I think utils will just exit in
pw_encrypt) to see whether it shall be always activated / autodetected or
configurable.
My guess is that it can be always activated.
