What do you mean by "erasing" it?
IMHO "filling it with nulls" is an efficient way of "erasing" something.

There are no particular reasons for this:
  1) It's the way it's currently done.
  2) The buffers has to be filled by some chars, and this is the first one
     that came to mind.

I'm not sure you can really find anything useful with this.
This would just mean that ps found some processes with their last
arguments being empty, or arguments which appear as empty by having the
associated buffer set to nul chars.
