[Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#487923: login freezes in multiuser mode with valid credentials (nis+nfs)

Package: login
Version: 1:4.0.18.1-7
Severity: important

Filing this bug against login is a pure guess, I just don't know any
better - sorry.

I'm having trouble logging into this system which uses NIS and NFS shares. When
I attempt to authenticate with incorrect credentials behavior is as
expected (short delay, error message, new login prompt) but when I
authenticate with correct credentials login (or a process following
after it) just stalls, and I can never get a prompt. At this point all I
can do is reboot (Ctrl-C doesn't have any effect).

This is alwas reproducible when I login in multi user mode, however,
when I start the system in single user mode I can login just fine as
root.

I recently did a BIOS upgrade on this Dell Optiplex 755 but I believe I
could login fine at least once after this. I did not install new packages
either, but have removed libnss-mdns recently.

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide.
