Thanks a lot for the patch.
I added it to the repository, and added the above paragraph to document
it.

By the Way, do you think it would make sense to have a configurable list
of variables to be preserved in login.defs? (Currently, there are TERM,
COLORTERM, and possibly (non PAM configurations) DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY.)
