[Pkg-shadow-devel] ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc/shadow would not work?

I do not think --sysconfdir has any influence on shadow's programs.
It might be used during "make install" to install some configuration
files.

It's surprising that you were no more able to login, unless you also
removed the /etc/shadow file at the same time (or replaced it by a
directory).

Also the source code makes use of APIs such as getspnam, which hardcode
the /etc/shadow file location.

What are you trying to achieve?
Maybe there is another way to do it.
