Quoting Mario Barchetti (bhaal.9k at gmail.com):
> Package: passwd
> Version: 1:
> Severity: important
> Hi,
> I've added a new group and I've set a password:
> $ su
> # addgroup public_group
> ...
> # gpasswd public_group
> Changing the password for group public_group
> New Password:
> Re-enter new password:
> But when I use newgrp the login always fails:
> $ newgrp public_group
> Password:
> Invalid password.
> I've tried many times to repeat everything, also changing the password or the name of the group, but newgrp always returns "Invalid password".
> "public_group" is both in /etc/group and in /etc/gshadows, the password field of /etc/group is 'x' and the password field of /etc/gshadows is not empty and doesn't contain '*' or '!'.

I can't reproduce this:

root at mykerinos:/srv/bubulle# addgroup bikinibottom
Adding group `bikinibottom' (GID 1004) ...
root at mykerinos:/srv/bubulle# gpasswd bikinibottom
Changement du mot de passe pour le groupe bikinibottom
Nouveau mot de passe :
Nouveau mot de passe (pour vérification) :

bubulle at mykerinos> newgrp bikinibottom
Mot de passe :
bubulle at mykerinos$
