login in unstable is currently not essential. This has unmasked
quite a few latent bugs, at least:

- #1074121: subuid/subgid need to be created somewhere
- #1074157: runuser/su need PAM but do not depend on it
- various gettys probably want login but do not depend on it

While Vienna is currently turned into a big party location, other
people might not want to have a party without an explicit
invitation. While I subscribe to "<unnamed> lets keep unstable
unstable", I know how bad the other side can look.

I explicitly want to thank helmutg@ and josch@ (in no particular
order) for 1) updating debvm, 2) pointing out problems uncovered by
mmdebstrap, 3) commenting on sub{u,g}id; the getty and telnetd
maintainers for updating their packages, but ... I agree it's "a bit
much all at once".

In #1071457, Helmut Grohne said:

I'd like to agree, OTOH I see we made a lot of progress.
#1071457 should be fixed by util-linux_2.40.1-9 momentarily. Let's
see if that is good enough?
If there are more problems that break in seriously unexpected ways
- and I count debvm as one - we can still revert.

I'm not attending DebConf in 2024, but (regardless of this event in
Debian) I've learned a number of life lessons this weekend. I'll
invite any DD/DM affected by this *in unstable* to join on this
arguably wild ride and any further wild rides!
I'm also offering a drink of your choice, and an evening of card
games, whenever we meet. Towards a better, well-defined future!

Chris
