There's no reason for much of anything in that build. It was originally a
non-automake project and it made life very difficult for libtool and getting
shared libraries built properly, so I convinced Berin to convert it to
automake, but there's a lot of weirdness in the way the header files are
copied around. I've managed to keep it working and not much else. I suppose
I might try and redo the include file handling at some point.

Xerces has similar header file nonsense going on, although they may have
changed that with 3.0.
