Getting in a new upstream at this point is almost an automatic no.
However, the diffstat does look managible.

You'll need to explain each change, possibly a bit better than is done
by the git log messages in the repository, possibly not.  I think the
release team could say yes.  I think the release team will say yes to
every patch that actually affects a unix build.  They may well reject
the mac build patches since they don't matter on Debian, and as a
result, they may well reject the new version even though they accept all
the changes that matter.

I'd say go for trying to get the new upstream in and fall back to all
the patches if that doesn't work.

the template is fairly good.
