You probably want gbp-clone, which does the legwork of checking out
the pristine-tar and upstream branches. If git-buildpackage does not
work right OOTB after gbp-clone, then there's something seriously
wrong.
debcheckout ought to be fixed for that, though; it currently just does
a plain git clone, and doesn't checkout the other two branches.
