I guess you mean the hand written check in override_dh_install [1].

Fair enough. Having the error message right from the start would have
made it easier to see what the actual problem is.

Martin, I see you bumped the dep to (>= 2.2.1-2). If we really want to
support backports that should be 2.2.1-2~
