Now I am getting
$ systemd --test
Trying to run as user instance, but $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not set.

Had to use
$ XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp systemd --test

Maybe the man page at --test should remind the user to set this to
something, else it looks like a bug.

Or maybe you should set it internally if not found.
