Yes, every time. It only happens after logging out of a session, though.

No. It's a laptop. One screen, one X server.

I've tried it now, and the problem goes away when using lightdm. I
have now switched to lightdm because I don't really care about a
particular display manager as long as it lets me enter the login and
password.

I did not often test the logout scenario (I'm the only user of the
machine, and rarely log out, only lock). Still, I suspect that this
started happening since the last system upgrade (I follow testing and
do “aptitude full-upgrade” about once a week). In the last upgrade,
neither xorg nor slim were updated (which is why I didn't blame it on
slim), but systemd was.

I'll forward the apt-listchanges report into this bug.
