Report from Debcamp/Debconf 2016

Hi everyone!

Friday marked the last day of Debcamp, which is taking place in the
beautiful city Cape Town. Besides the mandatory sight seeing, we also
managed to do some actual work :-)

jessie backport
===============
mikap (Michael Prokop) approached me about providing a backport for
jessie. He remembers having issues with the jessie version (services
getting confused if journald is restarted) which is fixed in newer
versions of systemd, so would like to have something newer via
jessie-backports.
After investigating the situation of the package in stretch/sid, which
has some dependencies which aren't available in jessie, we concluded
that it's probably best to not attempt to backport util-linux, but
instead revert the upstream commits related to libmount.
The other main issue is ifupdown, because net.agent (allow-hotplug)
moved from udev to ifupdown. A backport of ifupdown seems simple, so we
will probably go that route. We poked andrewsh who wasn't aversed to the
idea but we should probably also talk to Guus Slippen about that.
Mika has been working on that and I afaik he has some packages already
which mostly work.

jessie stable update
====================
The next stable point release 8.6 will probably be in August.
I've been reviewing the existing bug reports which requested certain
fixes for stable [1] and either committed them to the jessie branch or
asked for more information.
I haven't asked the stable release team yet regarding an upload. I will
probably wait another week or two, in case new bugs are filed (during
Debconf).

removal of legacy stuff
=======================
zeha (Christian Hofstaedtler) has been busy preparing updates for
packages affected by the innserv removal [2] and the initscripts
dependency [3] and uploaded them to DELAYED/10.
The main blocker regarding the initscripts dependency remains procps, so
we should probably poke Craig Small again in the near future.

Progress was also made on the rcS front [4] with nbd being uploaded by
wouter. The remaining blocker is mdadm. Hopefully we can get a hold of
xnox during Debconf and have this sorted out.

systemd diet
============
Although not happening at Debcamp, I still want to mention it as it
happened during Debcamp.
Felipe did some nice work on turning systemd's libshared and libbasic
into a private shared library [5]. Those bits landed upstream a couple
of days ago and Martin was eager to cherry-pick that. The latest update
of systemd in stretch 230-5 dropped a whopping 9MB and is now half the
size before compared to 230-4.

Thanks everyone! It's nice seeing progress on various fronts.

From the other side of the world,
Michael
