This was red herring, after installing and booting the 4.8.0-1-686-pae
kernel I observed exactly the same problem when upgrading systemd and
udev again.  I can also confirm that there is no problem on an amd64
system, as observed in https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/4575.
