You're right. I actually just found that this is a known Linux kernel limitation.Strange that I looked on kernel.org for documentation but couldn't find itfrom the main page. A new Google search led me to this link.

"Note that you can only define one console per device type (serial, video)."
Sites I previously visited had incomplete second-hand info.
