Well, it doesn't - downgrading it to jessie makes it work again with
kernel 4.4.

However, great to hear that systemd *is* supposed to work with kernel 4.4,
so this is a real bug and not a wishlist (I forgot to mark it as wishlist
originally, which I thought it is).

Because I thought systemd is what cleans up dm-targets at shutdown. If that
is wrong, would yuo happen to know what component is responmsible for this and
then I can investigate why it breaks when systemd is upgraded from jessie to
stretch?

The other components I use - dmsetup and lvm2 - do not cause this problem and
work fine in their stretch versions.
