"systemctl status" was hanging as well. There was still a pid 1
process, possibly not responding. (I don't know enough about systemd
to be able to say if systemd had crashed, or dbus, or some other
component.)

I couldn't find anything.

As my report is likely not specific enough to be actionable, please
feel free to close it. If it happens again, I'll try to follow Simon's
debugging advice and open another one.
