/var/log/kern.log.2.gz ends Jan 18 13:42:44, and kern.log.1 starts
Apr 20 10:44:25 moe kernel: [7934533.789201] systemd: 23 output lines suppressed due to ratelimiting
Apr 20 11:26:08 moe kernel: [ 0.000000] Linux version 4.9.0-5-amd64 (debian-kernel at lists.debian.org) (gcc version 6.3.0 20170516 (Debian 6.3.0-18) ) #1 SMP Debian 4.9.65-3+deb9u2 (2018-01-04)
which was the reboot after which the problem was gone.

Exactly the same on the other box.

One since Jan 18, the other one since Feb 19.

That works now, both systems have been rebooted since exhibiting the
problem.
