Fwiw, GNOME on Wayland (with gdm) seems to work fine here. At least I
didn't recognize any breakage.
And I have

$ getfacl /dev/dri/renderD128
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/dri/renderD128
# owner: root
# group: render
user::rw-
user:michael:rw-
group::rw-
mask::rw-
other::---

If this looks different for you, the output of

$ loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID

would be useful as well.
