Perhaps, as I noticed at the end of my mail, the reason may be that
initrd.img-4.18.0-3-amd64 is old enough (it was built before the
upgrade of the systemd packages to 240).
I can see in the apt/term.log logs that after upgrading the
nvidia packages, there was a
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.132) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.19.0-1-amd64
Thus this can explain the first failure, which occurred after the
reboot of the machine a few days ago.
