This is fairly close to what Mark and smcv ended up doing: effectively
removing /run/systemd/system, doing the package operations and
immediately rebooting.
They didn't boot into a special environment, so what they did is a bit
more risky.
But as a script explicitly run by a sysadmin on a reasonably quiet
system,
I think that might well be an appropriate answer at least in the scope
of proposal B, where we're trying to enable exploration of new
alternatives.
Such exploration is inherently somewhat experimental in nature.
