When I closed the lid (and handle-lid-switch was not inhibited),
I got the reason in the logs:

May 20 13:28:20 zira systemd-logind[786]: Lid closed.
May 20 13:28:20 zira systemd-logind[786]: Suspending...

But here, no reason was given, i.e. just the "Suspending..." line,
which made me assume that it was logind's own decision. The reason
is important enough to have something in the logs!
