It's there in 2.86.ds1-1 (sarge) but gone in 2.86.ds1-4 (etch), which contains just:

> exec /etc/init.d/rc S

OK, here's the relevant change log entry:

In #326460 the submitter (Petter Reinholdtsen) writes:

Petter: This change eliminated the parentheses, the trap commands and the "set start".
All of these should probably be reintroduced somehow.  Can you take care of this?

The absence of "set start" is reported in #345267.
