I don't see how the change to the umountfs script can make any difference to how
df works.

Given the subject line, it seems that you think that /etc/mtab is symlinked to /proc/mounts,
whereas the new sysvinit package does not symlink /etc/mtab to /proc/mounts.

In any case: Does it make sense to run boot and shutdown script in a chroot?
