I guess I discovered this problem because upgrading initscripts inside
the chroot mounted a few tmpfs mountiongs. :)

But I realise now that the symlink from /etc/mtab to /proc/mtab was
inserted by the ltsp build script and not sysvinit, and also that the
change I quoted is only used for umounting during shutdown, not for
replacing /etc/mtab.  I was just confused.  :)
