What machine *exactly* do you use?  What kernel?  With which patches?

And do you have *any* USB mass storage devices in that machine?

Which ThinkPad? AFAIK all of them (in fact, every box I ever heard of or
worked with) let you press the power-button and hold it pressed to force a
power-off.

If it is freezing that hard, you have a kernel or hardware issue.
