This is definately worth doing.  The unfortunate wording used in the manpage
("already running shutdown") implies shutdown -c could cancel an ongoing
transition to the 0 or 6 runlevel, which it *cannot*.   It cancels an
already running shutdown *command* that is waiting to tell init to switch
runlevels.
