Well, since this seems to lead to longer discussions with a lot of pros,
cons, and issues and difficulties... would it probably make sense to
split the discussion about /var/x being able to be tmpfs'ed out and just
choose another location for the intended place-to-store-things-while-
nothing-else-is-mounted-rw?
Probably even some location that disappears later in the boot-process
when (other) writable (persistent) locations are available - perhaps it
disappears only when empty or something like this to prevent data-loss.
IMHO, the only requirement for this location is that it should be a
mount-point which is and stays on the /-fs, i.e. it does not tend to get
over-mounted or hidden by any other mount.
