Seems strange indeed to kill processes that would already be running in
runlevel S.

Anyway, I just wanted to add pppd to the short list of rcS.d daemons you
compiled[*] a while ago.  Any PPP interface started from
/etc/init.d/networking is currently torn down when going to rc1, and
never brought up again.
