[Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#598891: sysvinit: shutdown time message is too noisy, prints too many messages

Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.88dsf-12
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream

When I call shutdown like this:

sudo shutdown -r '+240' "We're rebooting in 4 hours for kernel and libc updates"

It will proceed to wall() all consoles 17 times before shutting down,
or at T-minus:

    240
    150
    120
    90
    60
    45
    30
    15
    9-1

Followed by the NOW message. This is way too noisy if you have a
scheduled reboot and multiple users on your system, they all have to
C-l their terminals after each message.

There should be a way to configure the noisyness of these
messages. E.g. I'd be happy with one warning at T-minus 240, then one
at T-minus 10, followed by one at T-minus 1 and then the NOW message
at T-minus 0.

>From reading the documentation and the source there doesn't seem to be
such an option, please add one. Thanks.
