Fair enough. At least I had to ask both for my benefit of not having to
maintain the patch, and potentially yours had it been useful to someone
else.

Short version is that we want as many files on the system to be trackable by
the package manager.
dpkg -S /etc/rc3.d/foo 
works for us and does not work with update-rc.d in postinstall.
