For the examples I mentioned, those files don't need to be persistent, so
/var/tmp would not be the right place.

Well, I don't consider programs using /tmp for large temporary files as buggy as
long as someone can provide reference for it.
At least neither the FHS nor the debian-policy give justification for that.
