Regardless of whether that change is eventually applied to the Linux Kernel:
1. People will continue to run stable distribution kernels
2. Whatever value the kernel chooses for an unset host name, be it the empty string, ``(none)'', ``localhost'', ``Amnesiac'' or whatever, should be treated by the init script as just that: unset. It doesn't appear to make sense to ask the kernel to set the hostname to unset in case it's unset.
