I forgot my fstab:

## interesting stuff HERE!
/dev/sda1      /mnt/backup     ext3    defaults        0       0


Just after posting my last message i switched an UUID based entry for this disk:

UUID=8b2b92c6-d3db-4757-a1ec-2773f12dadf1 /mnt/backup   ext3    defaults        0       2

this works fine - for now.
