After investigation of aptitude logs via a livecd, I've come to the
conclusion that kmod5 is the culprit here. As such I am reassign/merging
this bug with 659838 (hopefully I'm doing this right - bit of newbie
here)

As mentioned in 659838, downgrading to 3-1 results in a bootable system
for me.
