I think it would be useful to test with the stock Debian kernel,
3.2.0-2, to see if you still see the problem then.  It may only
manifest with a specific kernel version perhaps.

No.  At least, not the mounts themselves.  We moved the location
of the tmpfs defaults from /etc/default/rcS to
/etc/default/tmpfs.  But this should have zero impact--they are only
the default settings.

One minor detail to check is whether the filesystems mounted by
mountkernfs/mountdevsubfs are in /etc/fstab, and if they have the
"noauto" flag.  We now respect that flag if present, and skip the
mount.

Also, I may have asked before but, are you using an initramfs or
booting directly from the root filesystem?  udev has logic to
work with both; it may be that not using an initramfs is not as
well tested, and it's using a wrong path or something.
