Yeah. One idea that occured to me yesterday, as I refreshed my
memory, was that the metainit package and the #651004 but report
discussed just this issue a few years ago. What about putting it
there instead? The advantage is that it will end up in a package that
seem quite fit for the purpose. The disadvantage is that it will be a
new dependency for initscripts if we decide to use this feature in
those scripts, which I belive is a key to make this feature known and
ensure package maintainers that this is a safe thing to depend on.
