This is probably the same as Tk bug #1090382 [*].
It appears to be caused by a misconfigured fontconfig
system; running `fc-cache -fv` should fix it.

(Tk clearly should not crash in this situation; unfortunately
there does not appear to be a good recovery strategy, and
nobody has been able to reliably reproduce the problem.)
