What graphical card are you using (with which driver) and are you sure
acceleration is enabled?

As you have said yourself this looks like a clutter issue.

Could you also provides us a backtrace, with the packages installed:

empathy-dbg libc6-dbg libglib2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg
libclutter-gtk-0.10-dbg libclutter-1.0-dbg

Could you also try with the version in experimental?
