This is in fact reproducible in my laptop's sbuild instance (2/2 runs on
an otherwise mostly-idle laptop). Perhaps something has changed in an
underlying library?

IMO the right way to fix this is to pull 0.18 from experimental into
unstable - it's the recent upstream stable-branch, which we should land
before wheezy anyway. I'll downgrade my other Telepathy stuff from
experimental to unstable and check that it all still works.

There are unreleased fixes in the 0.18 branch upstream which should go
in too (notably a FTBFS on kFreeBSD), so I'll do a 0.18.1 upstream
release rather than just moving 0.18.0 to unstable.
