Dear Maintainer,

I only use Empathy for “people nearby”, especially on my VPN, and it has been working
perfectly for years (i.e., under Squeeze and Wheezy). A few days ago, though, it stopped
working, permanently staying in offline mode with the busy icon constantly rotating. (On a
different machine running Wheezy, it still works without problems.)

On startup, this rotation is paused a couple of times while the persona icon is showing in
the main window area. Then the persona icon disappears, and the busy icon keeps rotating
constantly.

If started from the command line, error messages appear when the rotation is paused:
