The problem is, that NM can't know, if wireless will be used any moment
or not. What will happen if NM automatically deactivates wireless when
you use wired network and then you pull the plug: NM will have to
activate wireless, start scanning, look for known APs etc. which will
potentially take quite some time. That's why NM keeps the list of known
APs up-to-date, so it can switch immediately as soon as the wired
network is gone.

nm-applet offers the possibility though to deactivate the wireless
manually. Rightclick on the systray icon and deselect "Enable Wireless".
NM then stops scanning for wireless networks.

That's imo the best compromise, what NM can do.

I'm thus closing this bug report. If you don't agree and want to see it
implemented differently, please reopen the bug and provide more details
how you would do it.
