Fair enough. But we still have the mkdir/chown in the init script, so
we're on the safe side.
The patch I posted also makes the behaviour consistent to the dbus
package (which also uses *.dirs+chown in postinst+fallback in init script)

@sjoerd: do you remember why you removed /var/run/hal from hal.dirs at
first place?

while at it, I noticed that avahi-daemon seems to be bugged a bit in
that respect, too. /var/run/avahi-daemon is neiter listed in *.dirs, nor
created in postinst or the init script.
Only avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh seems to check/create the run dir.
Something we should fix...

Btw, do you agree with to change the home dir of haldaemon to
/var/run/hal? Should we fix that for etch upgrades?
