Interesting.. Could you run
SALUT_DEBUG=all SALUT_PRESIST=true GIBBER_DEBUG=all telepathy-salut and then
connect to link-local with empathy.

The salut log should reveal interesting things :) (i'm telepathy-salut upstream
so saluts logs should be easy for me to debug)
