Ok, I got it, but:

 SALUT_DEBUG=all SALUT_PRESIST=true
GIBBER_DEBUG=all /usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-salut
** (telepathy-salut:3431): DEBUG: started version 0.2.0 (telepathy-glib
version 0.7.0)
** (telepathy-salut:3431): DEBUG: no connections, and timed out

That's all I can see as output, even before starting empathy, then the
program exits w/o any other message... 

What is more strange is that in the Empathy roster I see nobody, but
avahi-browser shows both me and my friend online!
