I've got exactly the same box with the same issue myself. This is actually a
bug in the network driver/card. After some time avahi no longer receives
multicast packets from the group it subscribed too. 

To work around this issue you can set the network interface to promisc mode..
Unfortunately that means that unrelated network traffic will also get passed to
linux instead of being dropped by the network card :(

Anyway, this is a kernel issue not a avahi one
