I think automatic renaming would be a bit weird too.

Fwiw, the "Auto " does not come from wether the connection should automatically
connect or not. It stemms from how you created it.
There are basically two ways to create a connection:
a) Explicitly via nm-connection-editor, where you choose the connection name
yourself.
b) Implicitly by clicking on a wireless network in the drop down list in
nm-applet. nm-applet will prompt you for the password (if needed) and
"automatically" create a connection for you.

I hope this makes it more clear.
