And if I then try to disable polling using hal-disable-polling, I get:
$ sudo hal-disable-polling --device /dev/hda
Polling is already disabled on the given drive.
$ sudo hal-disable-polling --device /dev/scd0
Polling is already disabled on the given drive.

Which seems to be another confirmation that polling should already
have been disabled.
